Siteground is a Webhosting company based out of Bulgaria. They’ve been around since 2004 and was started by a few university students including Tenko Nikolov, who is their current CEO. Since then they’ve grown to be one the biggest and most prominent Webhosting providers out there, specializing in website hosting rather than selling domain names. content:

Siteground Web Hosting

Siteground’s hosting is their bread and butter. And boy do they do a good job at it. For starters, Siteground offers 3 primary tiers of Webhosting. All of these tiers are hosted on Google Cloud rather than on their own servers. What this means is you get a higher quality of service from SIteground than you will from any other Webhost because they use best in class hardware.

All Plans: These are key features that are offered with every plan

  • Unlimited Bandwidth
  • Sitebuilder + Wordpress
  • SSL
  • CDN
  • Daily Backups
  • Email support

StartUp: The most affordable plan from Siteground. The StartUp doesn’t offer many extra features but has a strong core feature set including:

  • $3.95 / month
  • 1 Website
  • 10GB Storage

GrowBig: The GrowBig plan is Siteground’s mid-tier plan. This is the plan I would recommend for most projects as it has a nice balance of added features while also keeping the price low.

  • $5.95/month
  • Unlimited Websites
  • 20GB Storage
  • On-Demand Backup
  • Staging Environments
  • Collaborators

GoGeek: If you are looking to start a large scale website then the GoGeek plan is a no-brainer. It gives you the most storage space and comes with a ton of extra features you will find useful

  • $11.95/month
  • Unlimited Websites
  • 40GB Storage
  • On-Demand Backup
  • Staging Environments
  • Collaborators
  • White Label Clients
  • Git Integration
  • Highest Tier Resources
  • Priority Support

It should be noted that Siteground also lists “~10k, 25k, 100k” Visits Monthly as features for the site. I looked into this claim but found it to be marketing fluff. Yes, the higher tiers offer more storage space, however, all of them have unlimited bandwidth so they all should theoretically be able to support the same number of visitors, especially when you consider that your websites will be cached on a CDN.

Now let’s talk about their CDN support. Siteground has partnered with Cloudflare to offer a CDN to its customers. CDN’s are AWESOME because they cache your site and then distribute that cached site to your customers. Your website visitors are able to load your website faster and you as a website admin can handle exponentially more traffic overnight without a hiccup. I have used Cloudflare’s CDN in the past on some heavy-duty software projects and I can vouch that it’s a trusted and highly reliable CDN. And because Siteground offers this sort of CDN caching, it means that you can host 10k - 100k page views per month on your site without noticing a hiccup. One other advantage is global delivery, say you buy Webhosting with Siteground and decide to host your server in West Coast US. Without a CDN someone in Europe might experience slow loading times on your site but with a CDN they will load up to 10X faster.

In terms of security, Siteground offers top-notch security to its customers such as a custom WAF (Web App Firewall), an AI-based anti-bot system, and SSL encryption on all sites provided by Let’s Encrypt. Furthermore, all Siteground accounts are isolated in Google Cloud, this makes sure that even though one user on Siteground might be running insecure applications, your account and your applications will not be affected. Lastly, they automatically patch their servers so your servers will always stay secure and up to date.

As far as the best deal for hosting with Siteground, I would recommend at least the GrowBig plan. At $5.95 per month, it offers quite a number of good features for the price. My favorite though is GoGeek. At just $11.95 per month, they offer an incredible number of features for the price. Having the ability to White Label clients (basically putting your logo on an admin panel instead of Siteground’s logo) opens up the opportunity to start a web design business that leverages Siteground, it’s honestly stunning to see this offered in a regular plan as most companies only offer this on Enterprise plans.

Siteground Wordpress Hosting

Siteground specializes in managed Wordpress environments and provides one of the best Wordpress hosting experiences out there. For starters let’s go over some of the plans they have then dig into them. If you’ve been reading this far it should be noted that these plans are largely the same as the Webhosting plans, though with a few small differences that are specific to Wordpress.

All Plans: These are key features that are offered with every plan

  • Unlimited Bandwidth

I love Siteground’s Wordpress hosting service both for its competitive price and also because it offers such a compelling feature set on top of what Wordpress already offers.

For starters, Siteground built a custom Wordpress setup tool that will guide you through building a Wordpress site. This is awesome because even though Wordpress is touted as a “user-friendly” CMS, it can still take quite a bit of time to set up a good looking site so having a tool to help you set everything up saves you a ton of time.

Then we have their security practices. One of the headaches of setting up a Wordpress site is you have to deal with updating PHP that Wordpress uses and updating the underlying sever everything runs on. While it may not seem like a huge deal, wouldn’t you rather spend that time working on your website or patching servers that customers are never going to see? Even as a seasoned developer who is quite comfortable running and updating my own server, it’s still mental bandwidth that you have to expend, and having someone just take care of everything for you is fantastic.

When it comes to building a Wordpress site, the ordeal is pretty easy; however, building afastWordpress site is a completely different ordeal. I’ve made Wordpress sites “fast” and let me tell you it involves hours of configuration on the base level, plugins, and dealing with your content going out on CDN’s which is another beast entirely. Siteground knows this is a pain to set up properly so they built in most of the “best practices” one would employ to speed up a Wordpress site.

Whenever you set up hosting with Siteground, they preconfigure Nginx (the web server that runs Wordpress) with a special caching configuration that helps speed up Wordpress sites. There are a ton of technical details here so if you want to read more about their caching you can do so here.

Next, they have a custom Wordpress Plugin that will optimize your Wordpress installation for their hosting environment. Whenever you set up Wordpress professionally, you usually have to spend several hours tweaking minor settings to optimize Wordpress for the server you are running it on. Siteground has figured this out for you and provided a plugin to make that tedious process easy.

Finally, and this is probably the most important factor in keeping your Wordpress site buzzing along. They use CDN’s to cache your website, CDNs, or Content Delivery Networks, speed up your website by caching the contents of your site, and then when a visitor visits your site, they get a copy of your site from the CDN instead of your webserver. This is crucial as the main problem with Wordpress is that it can bottleneck as you get more visitors. With a CDN in place, the old-age problem of “too many visitors crashing your site” is a complete non-issue with Siteground.

Siteground VPS / Private Cloud Hosting

If you need something more substantial in terms of hosting. Maybe you run a large E-commerce site or active blog, for that you will want to look at Private Cloud Hosting from Siteground. Private cloud hosting is similar to VPS from other providers, however, unlike other providers, instead of a VPS hosted within the web hosts datacenter, this is dedicated resources within Google Cloud, on a technical level this is basically the same as a traditional VPS with some added benefits. Let’s take a look at Siteground’s Private Cloud Hosting tiers

Entry: The entry-level Private Cloud hosting from Siteground. Includes the following:

  • $80/month
  • 2CPU Cores
  • 4GB Memory
  • 40GB SSD Storage
  • 5TB Data Transfer

Business: This tier is intended for businesses looking to manage their own cloud. Features include:

  • $120/month
  • 3CPU Cores
  • 6GB Memory
  • 60GB SSD Storage
  • 5TB Data Transfer

Business Plus: Pretty much the same as business, but giving you more power. Features include:

  • $160/month
  • 4CPU Cores
  • 8GB Memory
  • 80GB SSD Storage
  • 5TB Data Transfer

Super Power: The highest tier in Siteground’s private cloud lineup. Offers the most power, memory and storage to customers who have large scale and CPU intensive applications

  • $240/month
  • 8CPU Cores
  • 10GB Memory
  • 120GB SSD Storage
  • 5TB Data Transfer

Now one thing to note about Siteground's Private Cloud Hosting. Unlike traditional web hosting when you have set tiers, Private Cloud lets you get only what you need by configuring your own cloud. The lowest you can get is equivalent to the Entry package however if you need more CPU's without the extra RAM or just need more storage space, you can customize your plan to your needs and save yourself money. The most expensive plan you can technically get on Siteground gives you 32CPU cores, 128GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage space but comes in at a hefty $2100 per month!

Another thing to know about Siteground’s Private Cloud is your plan is never set in stone. Say you buy a Private Cloud and you get it with 8GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. If you realize down the road that you actually need more RAM but less storage, on most hosting platforms you would have to migrate to a cheaper server but with the Private Cloud you can do this seamlessly.

This works the other way too. If you start with a smaller site and your site sees a sudden explosion in growth. Normally this will cripple a site and force you to migrate to a larger server. However, with Siteground’s private cloud, this scaling is not only seamless but also automatic. Sit back and watch your visitors come through as Siteground takes care of managing the traffic on the backend.

Siteground Domain Names

Like I mentioned previously, Siteground’s primary focus is on web hosting and not selling domain names. While you can register a domain with Siteground, they offer relatively few TLD’s and many of their competitors offer better first-year prices. Lastly, they do not offer free Whois privacy, instead offering it for $12.99 per year.

The bottom line: If you need anything besides a basic domain name or really want to keep all your Webhosting needs under one roof, I suggest that you go elsewhere for your domain name.

While buying a domain name with Siteground could be better and the prices more competitive, it’s clear that this is not where Siteground is focused. Their Hosting offerings are stellar and priced very competitively. I am especially impressed that they offer CDN caching with all of their hosting tiers rather than the higher end ones and the website is mostly free of buzzwords and marketing fluff. However their hosting does leave a little to be desired, for one I wish that their prices were a little better for Private Cloud hosting and they offered more bandwidth with the higher plans, but I understand they have their hands tired a bit as they use Google Cloud instead of their own data center. Lastly, I wish they offered git integration with all tiers rather than just the GoGeek tier. However, these are just a small handful of things I wish Siteground could do better and overall their hosting services are stellar and highly competitive in price. If you are looking for excellent web hosting or a well-managed Wordpress experience and already have a domain name, I highly recommend giving Siteground a chance.
