Namecheap VPS Review

Updated October 4, 2020
In this Namecheap hosting review I will be covering VPS hosting offered by Namecheap. If you would like to read my full review of Namecheap you can see it here.
Namecheap is one of the most well-known web hosting companies out there. Founded by Richard Kirkendall in 2000. Today it’s one of the biggest web hosting companies out there. One thing that Namecheap does very well is keep their product line simple and affordable.
While other companeis offer numerous tiers of products, Namecheap offers just two VPS hosting products: Pulsar and Quasar. In this review I will be covering both, I will go over the pricing and upgrades and tell you exactly what you can expect to pay at checkout. Then I will look at the features and tell you if I think the features justify the price.
Namecheap offers two tier of VPS Hosting: Pulsar and Quasar. Pulsar, starts at $8.88 per month while Quasar will set you back $15.88 per month. However there are ways to get a better deal if you sign up for a longer term. Below i will break down all the prices
When you sign up for hosting you can sign up on either a Monthly, Quarterly (every 3 months) or Yearly.
Monthly: Monthly pricing will run $8.88 per month for Pulsar and $15.88 per month for Quasar. After the first month though, Pulsar will go up to $11.88 per month while Quasar will go up to $19.88 per month.
Quarterly: If you choose to pay Quarterly, Pulsar will cost you $28.88 for hte first quarter and $34.88 for every Quarter afte that. For Quasar you get the first quarter for $48.88 and after that the price goes up to $58.88 per month. Check out the table below to see how the price breaks down
|Pulsar||$28.88 ($9.62 / month)||$34.88 ($11.62 / month)|
|Quasar||$48.88 ($16.29 / month)||$58.88 ($19.62 / month)|
As you can see, if you choose to go with quarterly instead of monthly, you will actually be paying slightly more at sign up and when you renew, the discount is not as much as you would have hoped, saving you less than $1 per month verus going with Monthly.
Yearly: The Yearly plan will run you $110.88 for Pular when you sign up and $140.88 when you renew, as for the Quasar plan, prices to go up quite a bit with the first year being $198.88 and renewal coming in at $235.88. Obviously sticker shocker compared to monthly and even quarterly plans but you have to keep in mind you are paying for an entire year of service. Let's break down the price below and see if it's worth the money.
|Pulsar||$110.88 ($9.24 / month)||$140.88 ($11.74 / month)|
|Quasar||$198.88 ($16.57 / month)||$235.88 ($19.66 / month)|
As you can see, you really dont get any deals for VPS hosting. The only deal in getting a longer term is you an lock in the introductory price for a full 12 months rather than 1 or 3 months; however, after the introductory period I do not see a reason to get the longer plan.
Namecheap also offers serveral extras that you can add to your order at checkout. To start you can choose either CPanel or Interworx for server management. Both require licenses, Interworx is a flat fee of $12.00 per month for unlimited accounts. However for CPanel, your monthly fee is determined by the number of accounts you have:
- 1-5 Accounts: $10.88 / month
- 6-30 Accounts: $15.88 / month
- 31-100 Accounts: $29.88 / month
At Namecheap, all VPS plans come with full root access to your machine, your choice of server management software: Interwox or CPanel, and free transfer of your site to their servers.
Below is a breakdown of the most important features for each tier:
- 2 CPU Cores
- 2GB RAM
- 40GB of Storage in RAID 10 Configuration
- 1TB Bandwidth / Month
- 1 Dedicated IP
- 4 CPU Cores
- 6GB RAM
- 120GB SSD Storage in RAID 10 Configuration
- 3TB Bandwidth / Month
- 2 Dedicated IP's
While Pulsar is a great place to start for a VPS, Quasar has a few distinct advantages. For one you get double the cores and more than double the RAM. However the most important ugprade in my opinion is that you get SSD storage versus just regular hard drive storage on Pulsar. SSD Storage is much faster and more reliable than regular hard drive storage and I highly recommend the upgrade.
In addition you also get your choice of operating system: CentOS, Ubuntu or Debian. Additionally with CPanel you can also get CloudLinuxOS.
If you need more space, RAM or bandwidth, you can addon items al-a-carte to your order. Below are the extras that you can take advantage of:
- Extra RAM: $7.00 per 1GB per month
- Extra Storage: $10.00 per 10GB per month
- Extra Bandwidth: $10.00 per 100GB per month
- Extra Dedicated IP: $2.00 per IP per month.
Having these extras is a big plus, as you can add just what you need to your plan without having to upgrage to a higher plan. It's nice to see these addons though I wish they offered more CPU Cores as an addon.
Namecheap offers solid VPS hosting options though I have a few gripes with it. First off there is no benefit for signing a longer term. What is the point of signing up for a 1 year commitment if I'm saving pennies on the dollar over the montly option?
Also I wish that there was more customizability to your VPS. While you can add more RAM, Storage and Bandwidth, you cannot add another CPU core which is unfortunate. Overall I would recommend Namecheap VPS as they have good pricing and offer solid features, I just wish they offered a bit more customizability.
